On April 6, Université Laval and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) partnered to create a certificate for military leadership and management skills. This customizable certificate program will be available to Regular and Reserve Force members beginning in the fall 2018 session.

“This agreement reflects the importance that the CAF places on continuing education and professional development. We are pleased to partner with Université Laval, a prestigious institution, to support a quality program designed specifically for our military,” said Brigadier-General Hercule Gosselin, Commander of 2 Canadian Division and Joint Task Force (East).

Features

The certificate requires a total of 30 credits in a variety of courses covering leadership and management in the workplace. The program can be tailored to individuals, as there are only five compulsory courses (18 credits). Participants will be able to choose courses specific to their interests in order to fulfill the credit requirements.

The certificate program consists of hybrid and distance-learning courses:

Hybrid Mode: A dynamic combination of monthly classroom workshops and distance-learning workshops. In-class workshops will allow students to interact with peers, expand their network, and take advantage of the concrete experiences of each member of the group. Hybrid courses are mainly offered in Quebec City and Montreal.

Distance Learning: A flexible and comprehensive learning mode that adapts and responds to participants’ needs, wherever they are.

The program is only offered on a part-time basis.

The CAF is grateful for the opportunity to benefit from the academic expertise of Université Laval. This academic training program will allow the acquisition and implementation of essential new concepts to effectively mobilize a team. Participants will thus better adapt to their management roles as officers or non-commissioned officers.

Admission criteria

Applicants must:

  • Occupy a management position or be in a management position (advisory role) with hierarchical or functional authority at the time of application; and
  • Hold a Diploma of College Studies (DCS) or demonstrate academic training equivalent to DCS; or
  • Meet the definition of an adult candidate adopted by Université Laval (in French only).

Enrolled members will be considered students of Université Laval. They will enjoy the rights and be subject to policies, procedures, and academic and disciplinary regulations that apply to university students. These criteria will ensure a fair and equitable selection process, which is essential in the Memorandum of Understanding between the CAF and Université Laval.

Is this a good option for you?

If you are interested in this program, you must have permission from your chain of command before initiating the registration process. In addition, you must be a CAF member in good standing at the time of registration, and meet the established CAF recruitment and selection requirements.
