Watch the April 10 episode of Defence Team News!
In this episode, we highlight:
- the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Moreuil Wood; and
- Phase 2 of the Urban Operations Training System
Welcome back to Defence Team News, I’m Shelley Van Hoof.
And I’m Lt(N) Jeff Lura. Here are the headlines at Defence.
This year marks the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Moreuil Wood, a pivotal battle of the First World War.
The historic encounter was the last mounted charge of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and marks the site where Squadron Leader, Lieutenant Gordon Flowerdew, earned his Victoria Cross for leadership and gallantry during the battle.
Edmonton’s Lord Strathcona’s Horse was part of this cavalry brigade and traveled to France to take part in the recent commemorative ceremonies and events, including a Freedom of the City ceremony and re-enactment of the final charge.
Phase 2 of the Urban Operations Training System is underway at locations across Canada in Edmonton, Wainright, Shilo, Petawawa, Valcartier, and Gagetown.
The project, which delivers world-class training facilities for close-quarters urban fighting, consists of constructed training villages and live simulation equipment to help prepare the Canadian Army for future challenges in close-combat urban warfare.
Each village has 5 to 24 buildings and the largest facility, at Wainwright, can train a battle group of up to 1,500 soldiers.
These realistic, urban training environments prepare the CAF for new combat realities and allow members to improve their proficiency levels on a year-round basis.
Before we go, nominations for the 2018 Liz Hoffman Memorial Commendation are now open. This award recognizes CAF members, civilian employees, family members, and other members of the defence community who go that extra mile to help colleagues and bring about positive, lasting change to the Defence Team.
If you’d like to nominate someone, simply complete the Nomination Form in the related links and submit it before the April 30th deadline.
That’s it for us. Thank you so much for watching. See you next time…
