In this episode, we highlight:

  • Gender Advisor on Op REASSURANCE; and
  • UN Mission in Mali

Welcome back to Defence Team News, I’m Shelley Van Hoof.

And I’m Lt(N) Jeff Lura. Here are the headlines at Defence.

Major Micheal Duteau from 4th Canadian Division Headquarters has been deployed as a Gender Advisor on Operation REASSURANCE.

We spoke with Major Duteau from Riga, Latvia to learn more about his role as the first Gender Advisor in the history of the Canadian Armed Forces:

My role, specific to Op REASSURANCE, is being the Gender Advisor to the Task Force-Latvia Commander as well as the Commander of the Enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup.

Here, we use Gender-Based Analysis + which has us look at not only women and children but also, of course, Gender, but other factors, such as: race, geography, income, religion. Any factors that would show us a portion of the population, a group of people that perhaps we haven’t properly considered. By understanding them we understand the impact that what we’re trying to do might have on them, as well as what the impact they might have on what we’re trying to do. In the end, it results in a better plan.

As part of Canada’s return to peace operations, the Ministers of National Defence and Foreign Affairs unveiled a commitment to deploy an Air Task Force to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali.

The Task Force will be accompanied by a number of Canadian Armed Forces personnel, Chinook helicopters to provide urgently needed transport and logistics capacity for the mission, and Griffon helicopters to provide armed escort and protection.

Canada joins 57 other partner countries on the mission in their continued efforts to bring sustainable peace and stability to Mali and the Sahel.

As the Government registers its pledge with the United Nations, the Canadian Armed Forces will begin their planning process, in conjunction with the United Nations, partners and the host nation.

That’s it for us. Thank you so much for watching. We’ll see you next time…
