Students from Assistant Deputy Minister (Material) visited 22 Wing North Bay on February 19 and 20.
The visit was part of an initiative championed by Director General International and Industry Programs (DGIIP), intended to inspire students to consider a career with the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Erin Roberts, Chief of Staff to DGIIP, showed students how their work at the National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) in Ottawa affects bases and wings, and supports the CAF mandate.
On the first day of the visit, the students learned about the surveillance of Canadian aerospace. They saw how CAF members work alongside American military members in a bi-national team environment. The group was briefed on the NORAD mission on air sovereignty, space-based surveillance, and defence against air threats. The students closed out the day with some digital rifle training, focusing on weapon care, precision target training, and a simulated on-foot enemy pursuit.
The second day, the students took part in an early celebration of International Women’s Day. They heard from guest speakers, Olympic medallist Dr. Barb Olmsted, and author and Canada’s first female infantry officer Major (Retired) Sandra Perron.
DGIIP hopes to identify upcoming opportunities to showcase the diversity of the CAF to students and youth, and to encourage students to pursue careers with the Materiel Group.
