December 15, 2017 marked the completion of the first phase of the Defence Team’s move to its new, state-of-the-art workplace in Ottawa’s west end called National Defence Headquarters Carling – or NDHQ (Carling).
Since early 2017, approximately 3,450 military members and civilian staff of the Department of National Defence (DND) have relocated from offices throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) into the new facility. Scheduled throughout three phases, the move to the revitalized NDHQ will be completed in 2019 and will consolidate the Defence footprint in the NCR from over 40 different locations, to approximately seven. The move will generate cost savings over the long-term, and will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Defence Team by bringing nearly 8,500 members together into a modern and collaborative environment.
Located at 60 Moodie Drive, NDHQ (Carling) consists of 10 inter-connected buildings that offer designated recreational spaces, plenty of natural light, and modernized offices designed to foster a healthy work environment. Technology is integrated throughout the complex, and the use of laptops, Wi-Fi, VoIP phones, and multi-function printers allows for staff to work from virtually anywhere in the facility.
While the first phase of the move was not without some obstacles and delays, every effort was made towards ensuring a smooth transition for employees without disruption to their work routines, and minimizing the impact on move timelines.
With Phase One complete, design and construction for Phase Two is well underway. Set to begin in the late fall of 2018 and continue into 2019, the second phase will see an additional 4,000 people make the move to NDHQ (Carling).
