Correspondents complete their first assignment

journalism students ask question to the on-scene commander

Borden, Ontario — Twenty-five journalism students from Carleton University joined Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER as embedded journalists from October 27 to 29, 2017.

Hands-on experience is arguably one of the best ways to learn. This is exactly what 25 journalism students from Carleton University received when they joined Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER as embedded journalists.

From October 27 to 29, 2017, the students travelled to Borden, Ontario, to embed with teams performing explosive ordnance disposal and improvised explosive device disposal, as well as with search teams and infantry sections. This allowed them to see first-hand how the Canadian Armed Forces and international defence and security partners worked together to counter explosive threats.

It was an eye-opening experience for the students to see real soldiers in action as opposed to what they see in the media.

“It was interesting to watch how they are trying to learn and understand bomb makers,” said Michael MacKinnon, third year journalism student at Carleton University. “They want to find out who’s doing this and how to stop them.”

Noah Richardson, a fourth year journalism student, had this observation, “The thing that surprised me the most was that despite the fact that soldiers do a dangerous job, they don’t rush into danger. They are meticulous and methodical about everything they do to make sure everyone is safe.”

This experience, which is part of their Journalism and Conflict class, will help to prepare the students for what they might encounter in the workforce after they graduate. As well, having journalism students embed with their teams gives the military and police members the opportunity to experience what it is like having journalists working closely with them.
