Members of the Operation REASSURANCE Land Task Force (LTF) Poland are participating in Exercise SABER GUARDIAN in Eastern Europe from July 13 to 24, 2017.

As a member of the LTF Poland, Master Corporal Reiner Soliman is taking part in this exercise, which is led by the United States with more than 25,000 troops from more than 20 nations including Canada, Greece, Italy, and Romania. Troops are working out of Papa Air Base, Hungary.

As Section Commander for 7 Platoon from Charlie Company Group of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, he led his section members through Glass House Drills on ‎July 14, 2017.

“Basically we were rehearsing‎ entering a building using proper tactics, techniques, and procedures,” said Master Corporal Soliman. “We follow our drills to ensure we avoid mistakes. There is a certain way to enter the door of a building. You can’t hesitate. If you flinch, the guy behind you will flinch which could trigger a serious accident.”

Glass house rehearsals are foundation training for urban operations, a subset of conventional operations the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and its Allies practice ‎during exercises like SABER GUARDIAN.

“We take the training seriously, then we all laugh and relax together afterward. I love my unit and the guys I work with,” said Master Corporal Soliman.

Master Corporal Soliman joined the CAF in 2007 and has deployed three times since enrollment. Deployments have included Operation ATHENA, Afghanistan (2009); Operation RENAISSANCE, as part of Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team to the Philippines in 2013; and currently Operation REASSURANCE, LTF Poland.

Born in the Philippines, his desire to join the CAF‎ was instinctive as he comes from a military family. His grandfather fought in World War II. After enrolling with the Regular Officer Training Corps of the Philippines, his father served as an officer in the Philippine Army. Further, his sister served in Cadets in the Philippines.

“Canada is a good nation and I am proud to serve it,” said Master Corporal Soliman. “Service in the Canadian Armed Forces has given me great life experience.”

‎He also explained that the military has enabled him to travel. “Working in the military has allowed me to see many parts of the world while working with other nations.”

The 150-person team from the CAF serving on Exercise SABER GUARDIAN will move to Bulgaria to complete the final phase of the exercise.

LTF Poland members have participated in exercises throughout Eastern and Central Europe since 2014, demonstrating Canada’s commitment to NATO’s assurance and deterrence measures in the region.

Operation REASSURANCE refers to the military activities undertaken by the CAF since 2014 to support NATO assurance and deterrence measures aimed to promote working side by side with Allies and partners.
